Cooch Behar Trophy: Punjab post innings win over Odisha

Host Punjab defeated Odisha by an innings and 125 runs on the third day of their four-day Cooch Behar Trophy U-19 Group-A match at Gandhi Ground in Amritsar today. Punjab collected seven points from the thumping win, while Odisha drew blank.

Resuming their second innings at the overnight score of 40 for two and needing another 258 runs to avoid innings defeat, Odisha were all out for 172. Manas Ranjan Nayak was top scored for Odisha with 41 runs, while next notable contribution of 34 came from the blade of captain Raghunath Malla.

This was the second successive defeat in three matches for Odisha, who earlier lost to Chhattisgarh by 10 wickets after securing one point from the drawn first-round match against Saurashtra. Odisha now have just one point in their account and they will next meet Jharkhand at Vikash Ground in Bargarh from December 17.

Earlier electing to bat, Odisha made a sound start in the first innings with openers Swastik Samal and Kunal Mallick putting on 60 runs for the first wicket. But thereafter they lost wickets in regular intervals to be all out for 155. Jyoti Ranjan Behera was their top scorer with an unbeaten 34.

In reply, Punjab rode on a half-century each by five batsman to muster a formidable total of 452 for nine declared. Krishan Palai was most successful bowler for Odisha, taking five wickets for 124 runs.
